Many reputable magazines and articles have dealt with abdominal six pack development but there is still uncertainty. So the key points will be discussed again here.

At the beginning it should be restated that spot reducing to show off the abs will not work. At the beginning people often start with their abdominals when trying to get rid of belly fat hoping that the abdominal six pack will pop through. They don’t exercise any other muscle groups. They don’t think about their legs, or arms, or back and just hit the abdominals hard.

This has little benefit because of the small relative muscle size which does not use many calories and will therefore provide very limited advantage in losing fat.

In order to show off the abs the fat needs to be eliminated, and there are better ways of doing this than exercising the abs themselves. The ab muscles will benefit from some training individually but it is not required that they have a high focus to still get very good development. The abdominal six pack muscles will develop, but it is better to increase the loading and keep the reps under 25.

With work the abdominals will develop but will only be seen once the fat layer on the gut is eliminated. Most of the main strengthening exercises also work the abdominals in an indirect way, and so not much is required on the abdominals themselves.

Any exercise that utilizes the leg muscles, especially if weight is carried, will work the abdominals very well. Routines that involve deadlifts and squats will be great for this as will standing and seated presses, pulldowns, dumbbell pullovers, stiff-arm pushdowns, cross-bench dumbbell pullovers, and tricep pushdowns all engage the abdominal six pack muscles in a very effective way.

These abdominal six pack muscles may be there but won’t be seen until the fat layer is eliminated. This involves a complete exercise and nutrition program with the aim to get rid of fat and not just working on the abs.

A workout regime needs to have balance, it needs to be done regularly, and it needs to involve all muscle groups. In addition it will need to incorporate weight training and cardio components in conjunction with a balanced diet. If all of these factors are in place progress will be made.
