Lots of times when the terms drug misuse and drug dependency are talked about, people use them in the same context, but the fact is they are different animals. dependency to drugs comes by abusing them, but there is a lot more to dependency than abusing drugs.

Drug misuse is basically the repeated or uncontrolled use of controlled substances.  It can also be defined as the habitual misuse of a chemical substance.  This definition includes the use of drugs for purposes other than what they were intended.  In fact, drug abuse has a range of definitions, but all suggest disapproval at the use or overuse of a drug for non-therapeutic reasons.

On the other hand drug addiction happens when a persons body becomes addicted to having that chemical in their system and when they don’t have it they can suffer from withdrawls that cause physical and real adverse symptoms to the person addicted.  Drugs mess with the ability of the brain to function correctly and in so doing alter the brain to where it needs those drugs in order to function in its perceived normal way.

When a person becomes addicted to a drug, it doesn’t matter what type of adverse health reactions or damage to their body the drug does, they continue to use it.  I don’t really care about how the drug affects their personal health as long as they are able to continue getting that feeling that they receive from their drug of choice.  For these people quitting really isn’t a very easy option for them.  This is when abuse becomes dependency and when it must be faced and addressed head on.

Knowing the difference between drug misuse and dependency can help you to prevent somebody from escalating to a point.  When you know exactly what you are dealing with, it’s a little easier to begin looking for treatment options.

Whether you or a loved one is abusing drugs or are addicted to drugs, drug rehabilitation programs needs to be sought as soon as possible to help ward off serious health implications.  Treatment can have a profound effect on the drug user as well as on society as a whole.  Setting addicts free from their addictions in the society that we live in enables these people to function more effectively in society and get along with people better which creates a better and more peaceful society in general.

In fact, drug abuse is the number one cause of preventable illness and death in the United States. It doesn’t matter if we talk about cocaine, heroin, or alcohol, a drug is a drug and those drugs cause problems with the human body.  It is preventable and education is the first step.

Dependency and drug misuse are plagues for our society.  Both addiction and drug misuse have been around forever, and they are likely to be around quite a lot longer, but understanding the difference between these two will allow you to see the signs in someone who is at risk and give you the chance to possibly get them on the road to healing.
