The foreskin is a piece of skin that covers the end of the penis. If you have undergone a circumcision then it will have been removed. If you have any problems relating to your penis, such as a tight foreskin, then it can be very upsetting and embarrassing as well as painful. The only comfort you can be given is to be aware that there are treatments on offer for tight foreskin problems.
The actual terminology for a tight foreskin is phimosis. To know whether this is what you have you should ask yourself if you can pull the foreskin back to clean the area underneath. If you cannot then there will be a build up of a white deposit known as smegma. If you have phimosis then an erection can be very painful.
For some men it has been a problem that they have had since their childhood while others may develop up later on due to particular infections such as thrush.
If the foreskin is causing you discomfort when you try to pull it back then you should not force it as you may make the condition worse; though stretching it daily may help.
If the problem persists then you will need to consult a doctor who is often likely to recommend an operation, which may or may not be what you’d like. The most common procedure is to have a circumcision. This will involve your foreskin being cut away by a surgeon. It will cause you some discomfort for a number of weeks afterwards so it is best to avoid tight trousers or pants.
Another choice is an operation called preputioplasty. This is not as drastic as a circumcision as the foreskin is sliced rather than removed. The incision is then cross stitched to give a wider more flexible foreskin. It will leave a natural looking penis.
