In a study, people with higher IQ scores could more accurately identify the direction of small, flashing bars on a busy computer screen than participants with lower IQs.
The reason: Intelligence is partially based on your ability to sort important information from useless background noise, says study coauthor Duje Tadin, Ph.D. And most of the time, background images (like the scenery while driving) are less important than small details, like a dog dashing out into the road.
Luckily, you can train your conscious ability to focus while getting smarter at the same time—and it only takes 3 minutes, says Gary Small, M.D., coauthor of The Alzheimer’s Prevention Program. Try it: Pick anything in your office to stare at (just not a coworker) and study each visible detail of the object, letting any unrelated thoughts pass through your mind. Like meditation, the focus retrains your mind’s ability to concentrate.
