While a woman is far more likely to contract a yeast infection in her pubic region, men can suffer from it as well. There are several symptoms and none of them are desirable. If the correct treatments and preventative measures are taken, the condition can be eradicated and never return. While yeast infections can occur almost anywhere in the body, the most common and treatable areas are on the surface of the body. Yeast requires warm, moist areas to grow, so being on the surface of the body only leaves a few options. These are the pubic region and the mouth. Men and women can get yeast infections in both places, but the symptoms to be discussed here are those associated with a penile yeast infection.

Most symptoms can be seen at the tip of the penis, where red inflammation occurs. Often there will be dry and flaky skin that is spotted with ulcers. The area may itch constantly, but scratching the area only results in a burning sensation and bleeding of the sores. An unusual discharge may occur and there is likely to be an unpleasant burning feeling during urination.

All these unpleasant symptoms are caused by a simple fungus called Candida which is found naturally in the body. When everything is at a proper balance, there is no issue, but when the good bacterium that is present in the body gets skewed for whatever reason, the fungus is allowed to grow, causing the infection. The imbalance can be caused by a great number of things, including hormonal changes, high levels of sugar, poor hygiene habits and excessive moisture. Hormonal changes can be caused by taking steroids, antibiotics and certain medications. High levels of sugar can be blamed primarily on poor a diet. Poor hygiene speaks for itself and excessive moisture can be the result of wearing a bathing suit for too long or not properly cleaning after using the restroom.

Finding a competent cure for your condition can sometimes be made possible only when you know why the breakout was caused. Sometimes it is completely out of your control, like if you have diabetes or a compromised immune system. Many other times, it is within your control, like if you overuse steroids, antibiotics or other drugs. Creams are usually the first kinds of treatment sought after because the nature of them soothes the infected area. Symptoms will usually dissipate within one to two weeks. Often these do not prevent reoccurring yeast infections, so other remedies should be combined with the use of creams.

Since there have been several problems that arise from the use of drug-based treatments for yeast infections, many people turn to natural remedies. These are not holistic, but rather focus on your diet. Be sure to add foods like plain yogurt, garlic, apple cider vinegar and herbs to your diet. These are perfect for increasing your recovery time. Combining several forms of treatments, natural and medicine-based, can rid you of your infection and keep it away.
