“My, what a big guitar you have!” Forget about learning to play an instrument—just holding one is enough to pique her sexual interest, finds a new study of Facebook profile pictures.
Past research has shown that serenading a woman can lure her into your bed. But why go through all that trouble? A team of Israeli researchers tested whether the mere appearance of musical ability could boost a guy’s sexiness.
To find out, they sent friendship requests to 100 attractive, single women. The requests featured a profile pic of a good looking guy, and included the suggestive message, “Hey, what’s up? I like your photo.” In half the requests, the guy was holding a guitar. In the other half, he wasn’t. Everything else about the two profile photos was identical.
How’d the ladies respond? Only 5 of 50 women accepted a friendship request from the guitar-less guy, while the dude with the axe scored 14 attractive new “friends,” according to the study.
Like a male peacock’s tail feathers, playing an instrument won’t do much for you in terms of survival. But, like those tail feathers, your musicality is something women find alluring at a basic, subconscious level, explains study author Sigal Tifferet, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Israel’s Ruppin Academic Center.
“It may signal that you have better genes, or that you’re multi-talented,” Tifferet says. Studies have also shown that musicians tend to have smaller digit ratios between their index and ring fingers, which is a sign of prenatal testosterone exposure. (Discover what your hand says about your penis.) So, basically, musical ability is linked to manliness, and women recognize that, Tifferet adds.
If you’re fishing for love online, start littering your profile photos with guitars, drums, or any other musical instrument you can find, the study suggests. (Well, maybe not flutes.) And if you’re still not having luck with your profile pic, you may want to lose the smile. Although research is mixed, women rated smiling the least attractive facial expression in a large, photo-based study from the University of British Columbia. Smiling men look friendly, but serious guys look hot, the study found.
