It’s tough to adhere to much less get started on an exercise regime as a a full-time mom or dad still, it is possible. Lucky for you, with a little creativity and ingenuity it turns out that the day of a busy parent has countless opportunities to sneak a work out in. You just need to know where they are. Below are just a handful of ideas for you to sneak in some of that all important time for exercise that you may not have seen before.
Make your children part of your workout plans With the alarming rate of childhood obesity, it’s every parent’s duty to keep their children and themselves on some sort of a regular exercise regime. Here’s an opportunity you can take advantage of: Instead of sending them out to play take the opportunity to play with them too. Don’t use your to-do list as an excuse not to get moving and take the time to play with your kids.
Another idea, especially if you have young children is getting into your workout gear just as soon as you get out of bed and vowing not to take them off until you’ve gotten in your workout each day. This way, you’re primed and ready to get down to exercising at the instant you find an opportunity – for example, when the children nod off for a nap or are watching “Yo-Gabba-Gabba”. By wearing your workout clothes, you’re also sending yourself a constant reminder that your exercise regime is a priority.
Now, some days are just too busy to sneak in a shower much less a full exercise regime. Even on days where a full workout isn’t an option, there are simple ways to supplement your exercise regime without a full-on 30 minute cardio session. One idea: you can park in the back of the grocery store lot to add a few additional steps to your day. Better yet, make it a point to pick up the pace when you walk to and from the car. At-home parents can make their workouts a game with small children by doing push-ups with young kids on their backs or leg lifts with their child holding on. Your children will love it. Why not climb a few flights of stairs during those in between times when the soup to get ready or a pot to boil. Not matter how you slice it keeping to a healthy workout schedule will stand to keep you feeling more alert and able to care for your children it also helps you set an example for your kids in the long term.
