Let us suppose that 50% of the soccer coaching drills have focused on perfecting the trapping skills of their players. You will not be convinced with the statement. But interestingly, researchers say that trapping, besides dribbling and passing is mainly responsible for consistently winning matches.
The ability to capture the ball and retain it for a considerable time is called trapping. Such soccer exercises allow players to use thighs, feet and chest in doing so.
Players must be familiar with the job of trapping the ball. If they can’t trap the ball, they are sure to lose their grip over the match because this is very basic. Some of the following techniques help in enhancing the trapping skills of the players.
Involve the Feet: Primarily, the coach must teach the players to use their feet in tackling the ball. Particularly in kids soccer drills, teach the kids to use inside of their foot. The fact that the inside area of the foot is large makes it easy for the players to hold the ball.
If the players are advanced and mature, teach them to use the instep or top of the foot as well as the whole foot in trapping the ball during the soccer coaching drills. Guide the players to use their shin or ankle as the best bet to hold the ball if the ball is leaping too much.
Thigh Movement: To control high-speed and bouncy ball, thigh can be used very efficiently. Train the players to stop the ball with one thigh, get stable using the other, after getting in front of the ball. It is important to learn that as soon as the ball meets the thigh, the knee should be dropped so that the ball drops right there and does not move away from the player.
Master the skill of capturing the ball using the knee and then dropping the knee so the ball plunges down and stays within range by intensively working on this exercise.
Use the Chest: Trapping a ball flying high in the air with the use of your chest is also equally useful, like the use of thighs. Train the players to confront the ball head on by taking their chest out in full force in order to control the ball. When they do so, the ball will instantly loose its speed and easily get down to the feet.
But make sure that in soccer training drills, this technique should not be rigorously taught to the young players. It is very typical of them to use their hands while trying to stop the ball with the chest. This practice could lead to a problem by kids getting comfortable using their hands to deal with the ball.
