If she rejects your best pickup line, blame the crappy weather. An overcast sky casts shadows over your flirty advances, finds new research from France’s University of South Brittany. (Only the French study this stuff.)
Past studies have shown that sunny days improve people’s moods and their sociability, so researchers wondered whether cloudy weather would have the opposite effect on women’s approachability. To find out, they recruited five good looking guys and asked them to use the same pickup line on 500 random women. Each woman was approached outdoors on either a sunny or a cloudy spring day.
How’d the guys do? On sunny days, more than 22 percent of the women were willing to hand out their phone numbers. But on cloudy days, rejections dropped 8 percent, with guys scoring digits less than 14 percent of the time, according to the study.
“In my opinion, the presence of sun improved each woman’s mood and made her more receptive to courtship requests,” explains study author Nicolas Guéguen, Ph.D., a professor of behavioral sciences at South Brittany. He cites multiple studies that show subtle environmental or situational cues can unconsciously affect a woman’s mood, making her more likely to say “yes.”
Here are three more weird factors that could help you score a date:
1. Getting Handsy
Whether asking for a dance or a phone number, men who lightly touched a woman’s forearm while making their pitch were 15 percent more likely to hear “yes” than men who kept their paws to themselves, finds another of Guéguen’s published studies. (Keep this guy away from your girlfriend!)
2. Flower Power
When men asked out women in a room containing fresh flowers, their chances of success jumped more than 30 percent, finds a study in Social Influence. In the same study, a similar experiment found women exposed to flowers rated the same group of men as more sexually attractive and more dateable.
3. Smooth Tunes
When exposed to romantic music, women were nearly twice as likely to say “yes” to a date, according to Psychology of Music study. The seductive music unconsciously put the women in a romantic mood, the study explains.
