When people consumed 1,000 milligrams of berberine a day for 3 months, their LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides fell by 16 percent and 21 percent respectively.
Past research on berberine suggests that it might inhibit an enzyme associated with atherosclerosis, a condition caused by a build-up of plaque in the arteries that can lead to heart disease and stroke. This may make berberine a good option for people who have tried statins and stopped because of such side effects as muscle pain.
“For people who are unable to take statins, this might be a consideration, but you should certainly review it with your physician first,” says Men’s Health cardiology advisor Prediman K. Shah, M.D.
Tell your doc that two capsules of Thorne Research Berberine-500 ($29, amazon.com) was the dosage used in the study.
